OUR MISSION

TAAPISTRY strives to promote strength, solidarity, and authentic representations of AAPI experiences to form a more open and accepting community.

In recent years, anti-AAPI racism, violence, and xenophobia have seen a sharp uptick. Members of the AAPI community are too often “othered” and excluded, seen as foreign, and subjected to damaging stereotypes and misconceptions, rendering our authentic selves and stories invisible.

To combat anti-AAPI hate and bias, we are collecting everyday stories from the AAPI community. Through sharing our stories, we create space for others to hear our experiences, as well as empower ourselves and others to raise our voices. Together, we subvert stereotypes, foster empathy and understanding, and spread awareness about the issues we face, while also celebrating our rich diversity.

Our name, TAAPISTRY, encapsulates this mission by representing how a multitude of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and stories are woven together to create an intricate, vibrant "tapestry" of AAPI experiences.

OUR TEAM

Sarah Tsu

Founder

Sarah has always been drawn to activism and feels strongly about communicating AAPI voices to the community. She enjoys talking to others about their unique journeys and hopes to create a world full of empathy and cherishing diversity. In addition to running TAAPISTRY, Sarah has a passion for engineering and STEM. Striving to protect the environment, she loves solving problems to promote sustainability. During her free time, she plays the clarinet, cuddles with her adorable golden retriever, eating sweets, and binge-watching TV shows with her sisters.

Madison Zhan

Director

Ever since Madison was a little girl, she has championed gender equality and female empowerment. She enjoys regular verbal sparring with her father over women's involvement in various traditionally male-dominated careers and seeks to break down gender barriers and challenge stereotypes by telling women’s stories. Her ultimate goal is to find gender justice. A native New Yorker, Madison lives with her parents and younger brother in Battery Park City and attends a specialized high school in lower Manhattan. She is actively engaged in volunteer work with senior citizens in her community and hosts weekly meetings promoting human rights and universal education. She is passionate about the psychological and anthropological lenses on feminine life and gender equity. In her spare time, Madison enjoys listening to lo-fi music, skateboarding, and trying different flavors of bubble tea.
